Council Approves Installation Of Driver Center Kiosk At City Hall
Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council voted Thursday to allow the installation of a kiosk at city hall in order to allow residents access to many of the services that are currently provided through driver testing centers.
In November the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security confirmed that the Lawrence County Driver Service Center, located at 235 East Gaines Street, would be permanently closed effective December 28, 2012.
In response, local leaders contacted state political leaders to voice their opposition to the action.
The Lawrenceburg center was merged with the driver service center in Columbia. Officials then announced that kiosks would be installed in several counties in order to allow more universal access to services.
During the council’s meeting Thursday, Durham said that Commissioner Bill Gibbons had asked to contract with the city to place the local kiosk in the lobby at the City Administration Building.
Durham reminded council members, “It was our pursuit to keep these services here. We offered space in our building, and they took us up on our offer.” Council members voted unanimously to approve the measure.
Once installed, residents will be able to utilize the kiosk for access to most services provided through a service center. Those who need to take tests to obtain a license, however, will still need to do so at the center at 1701 Hampshire Pike in Columbia.
